The Natural History Gallery's Edwardian decor captures the essence of a bygone era by retaining many original, now antique, display cases and uses natural light enhanced by modern lighting

A large proportion of the objects on display are taxidermy specimens, ranging from birds to some large mammals. These are supplemented by objects from our insect collection, some soft-bodied invertebrates preserved in spirit and a human skeleton. The exhibits are set out according to their scientific classification, or taxonomy, and displays feature a wide range of animal and plant specimens explained by informative text panels.

Our butterfly map, and the many butterflies set out in the drawers of the tall cabinets are particular favourites with visitors.
