    Out & About

Children growing up in the 1940s and 1950s had far fewer toys than children do these days and spent most of their time outdoors. With little traffic on the roads they played out on the streets of their neighbourhood. For children growing up in Haslemere, a relatively rural location, children played in woods, farmland and the local recreation grounds. Children at this time were also expected to have a hobby and joining societies such as the Girl Guides or the Scouts were part and parcel of growing up.

    Track 12 Growing Plants

Credit line: John Belton talks about growing bedding plants with his family.

    Transcription:

Interviewee: He had two, I think one was about twelve by eight, but I can’t remember the other one. I think it was a bit smaller. Because we used to grow boxes and boxes of bedding plants and then sell them.

Interviewer: Where did you sell those then?

Interviewee: Oh anywhere. Where my Grandfather was working. He used to sell them to people where he was working in the gardens. Then we had regular people. Possibly some of them used to put a notice up in the shops. Always out to make a shilling somewhere!
