Interviewee: In the winter there were problems because we couldn’t meet in the garden. The summer house was our base in the summer. In winter we were told that we should go to the school room which is the three windows above the balcony [of Buckingham Palace]. Lovely views out but the children were just there looking out of the windows and I couldn’t get them to do what I wanted them to do in their very easily and then they got behind the curtains when the curtains were drawn. We used the passage outside for some things. There were fantastic things in glass cases in this school room. I don’t know how many glass cases there were, four at least, and there were all sorts of gifts from overseas to the Queen, Princess Anne and Margaret – various generations. I was petrified that some of these little rather toughs were going to break the glass or something whilst we were doing our work there. I said to Miss Peebles, the governess and my sort of liaison person, do you think there’s going to be any basement room or something where we could do the more rough things, which is what they should be doing, and so she asked and they gave us the cinema in the winter and that was very much better. They didn’t mind what we did in there. It was carpeted but that was much better.
