Interviewee: About two weeks later I got a phone call early in the morning to say you’ve got the job. I couldn’t believe it! And the next day you’re to go for an audience with the Queen in Mufti – well I didn’t possess any suitable clothes for that occasion. So this was a Wednesday and on the Thursday I was supposed to go there. [I was] starting school that day too. I couldn’t tell anybody but I said I must say that I’ll have to go have the afternoon off. And so I rushed round the shops to get something suitable to wear – it had to be a hat, gloves and everything &nash; and being rather tall at that stage clothes were very short. However, [I went to] a very kind place at Portsmouth because Guildford shops were always closed on a Wednesday afternoon and that was the only time I got. I went down to Portsmouth and they very kindly lengthened [my outfit] in about an hour so that it was the right sort of length. Coat and jacket was what you told to wear with a hat.
