Schooldays in Haslemere

Between the 1940s and 1960s, Haslemere had a variety of different schools. Private schools included St Ives, which at this time was a school ran by the Parents’ National Educational Union and as such emphasised the teaching of nature studies and the arts. The Haslemere School on Chestnut Avenue was opened on 22nd April 1900. It was originally designed for some 220 pupils and built by public subscription. There were also smaller schools such as Hillside School, situated for a time on the Petworth Road and run by the formidable Miss Welland, and Shottermill School in Lion Lane. Woolmer Hill, today the only secondary school in Haslemere, was built in the 1950s to satisfy requirements of 1944 Education Act.

Interviewer: Was it a very sporty school?

Interviewee: Yes, we used to play all the schools roundabout – there were quite a lot of private schools that we went to. Inval had a girl’s school and we used to play them at Rounders and things.

Interviewer: Where did you go to play sports?

Interviewee: It was at the Recreation Ground, up two hills, carrying the netball! The ones behind would kick it. Nasty thing for a child to have to carry a netball up there. We used to get very cross because if they kicked it would go further down than ever.

Interviewer: You would have to run after it!

Interviewee: Yes we used that a lot, I mean every class went up. I think we had a netball court down at school, we had an asphalt playing place outside, but the Recreation Ground was where we actually played and had sports day for all the parents.
