    Schooldays in Haslemere

Between the 1940s and 1960s, Haslemere had a variety of different schools. Private schools included St Ives, which at this time was a school ran by the Parents’ National Educational Union and as such emphasised the teaching of nature studies and the arts. The Haslemere School on Chestnut Avenue was opened on 22nd April 1900. It was originally designed for some 220 pupils and built by public subscription. There were also smaller schools such as Hillside School, situated for a time on the Petworth Road and run by the formidable Miss Welland, and Shottermill School in Lion Lane. Woolmer Hill, today the only secondary school in Haslemere, was built in the 1950s to satisfy requirements of 1944 Education Act.

    Track 19 Learning At Museum

Credit line: Marjory Bayliss talks about learning at Haslemere Museum whilst a pupil at St Ives School.

    Transcription:

Interviewee: That’s where we were introduced to the museum and all the nature side.

Interviewer: So you used to have little trips to the museum?

Interviewee: They used to take us down there every Thursday afternoon. I can remember Thursdays we all looked forward to because we did nature walks all round the town.

Interviewer: What kinds of things did you come across in those days?

Interviewee: There was Mr Edwards at the museum, I don’t know whether you’ve heard about him, who had this micro–projector. It was fascinating in those days – I mean there was nothing like that. We did pond dipping. Wonderful things! And those exams, which they had every year, we all loved doing. Can you imagine now anybody wanting to do exams?
