    Schooldays in Haslemere

Between the 1940s and 1960s, Haslemere had a variety of different schools. Private schools included St Ives, which at this time was a school ran by the Parents’ National Educational Union and as such emphasised the teaching of nature studies and the arts. The Haslemere School on Chestnut Avenue was opened on 22nd April 1900. It was originally designed for some 220 pupils and built by public subscription. There were also smaller schools such as Hillside School, situated for a time on the Petworth Road and run by the formidable Miss Welland, and Shottermill School in Lion Lane. Woolmer Hill, today the only secondary school in Haslemere, was built in the 1950s to satisfy requirements of 1944 Education Act.

    Track 26 Sunday School

Credit line: Alan Perry talks about going to Sunday School.

    Transcription:

Interviewee: My main thing was going to Sunday School, actually, with Mr Lintot. And I went to Sunday School and I loved Sunday School.

    Interviewer: Where was that?

Interviewee: Not St. Stevens Church it was the one opposite. It’s the lot that are in Lower Street. That one. And we used to go on Friday night, it was great, loved it because we got Rowntree’s Fruit Gums at the end of it. We were allowed to play, we were then forced to go inside and do a bit of Bible reading, which was always a bit of a pain, but then we could play cricket, football and get our Rowntree’s Fruit Gum. Although one day, and it still to this day lives with me, we were given little Purple Hearts, little violet sweets, which made me violently ill. And to this day I cannot have a blackcurrant juice without feeling ill, which goes back to those days. But that was quite good fun.
