Interviewee: In the latter end of the War we had a Doodlebug land in Three Gates Lane. At a house called Annesley. If you go up there today there’s still a great lump of shrapnel stuck in the front door.
Interviewer: Really? Gosh.
Interviewee: The next morning all the shops in the town, all the glass windows, with the blast, had shattered. I can still remember going out next morning and seeing all this glass everywhere. I said: ’Mum, why aren’t our windows broken?’ ’Oh, that’s because they’re too loose and they just shook.’
