Interviewee: Down into West Street, the Post Office has always been the Post Office, the first bit used to be Burgeois Stores right up to the alleyway. Post Office has always been the Post Office but there used to be the sorting office there, all the sorting used to be done there. Next door used to be Bayliss Motor Works, in the old days used to sell petrol, thinking back there used to be three places in the town centre that you get petrol: Haslemere Motor Co, Green’s Garage and Bayliss Motor works. Now you’ve got to go down to Junction Place. Greyswood used to be able to get petrol, that’s gone, Kings Road used to be able to get petrol, that’s gone. The telephone engineers had a place where they kept all their vehicles next to Bayliss, which is now where the Waitrose delivery area is, next door to that was a place called Haslemere Electric which used to do white goods, used to sell gramophones and gramophone records.
