Interviewee: There was a shop called "Gomans" which is now some furnishing shop along there as you turn off to Lower Street. They sold children’s clothing and furnishings and all sorts of things. Then there was a rather superior lady’s clothing shop "Stones" which then changed and had only china in it along Petworth Road. There was a hat shop on the corner which is now the fabric shop, right on the corner, called "Madame Mead and Randall", wonderful name, and they had amazing hats but then everybody wore hats. I mean you had to go to church in a hat. Yes, it was quite quite different.
